Anesthesiology

Overview

One of the key components in many medical procedures is anesthesiology. The highly skilled physicians at UofL Physicians – Anesthesiology provide anesthesia for a full range of medical procedures, including surgery, trauma, obstetrics, and critical care, as well as for acute and chronic pain. If you are facing a surgical procedure, or are under a doctor’s care for acute or chronic pain, UofL Physicians anesthesiologists will work closely with your team of specialists to ensure your safety and comfort.

If you are having surgery or anticipating childbirth, you are encouraged to discuss options for anesthesia before the procedure. You will want to ask your doctors what type of anesthesia they recommend, how you should prepare for the procedure and whether you will need to be accompanied to the hospital or outpatient center, or driven home after your discharge. You will also need to tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking and whether you have medical conditions such as asthma or diabetes. All of this information will be used by UofL Physicians anesthesiologists to expertly determine the type of anesthesia and calibrate the dosage that is right for your situation.

Treatments & Services

The highly skilled physicians at UofL Physicians – Anesthesiology provide anesthesia for a full range of medical procedures, including surgery, trauma, obstetrics, and critical care, as well as for acute and chronic pain.

General Anesthesia

Under general anesthesia, you are asleep during a medical procedure, so you don’t feel or remember anything that happens. General anesthesia is normally administered by a combination of intravenous drugs and inhaled gases.

Regional Anesthesia

Regional anesthesia blocks pain in an isolated area of the body, such an arm or leg. It can be provided by injecting local anesthetic directly around the nerve either as a single shot or with a continuous catheter through which medication is given over a prolonged period.

Monitored Anesthesia Care

Monitored anesthesia care — also known as conscious sedation — is a combination of medicines that block pain or help you relax during a surgical procedure. You may remain awake during the procedure, and will be able to return to your everyday activities soon after the procedure.

Spinal and Epidural Anesthesia

Spinal and epidural anesthesia are anesthetics that numb part of your body to block pain. They are administered via injections in and around your spine. While parts of your body will be numb, you will probably be awake during these procedures. This is a common anesthesia administered during childbirth.

Pain Management Center

The Pain Management Center at UofL Hospital provides advanced medical expertise and the latest advances in pain management. The center was developed when physicians began to see the long-term effects of pain.
