Dr Kavalukas is so respectful. She carefully discussed my case within closed doors even though we walked between exam rooms. It's how HIPAA should be anyway but most doctors don't.

I am an HIV+ patient who began to be treated for anal dysplasia in Portland Oregon a few years ago. I have moved back home and as such took the referral of my PCP Dr. Karen Krigger at UofL to Dr. Kavalukas.it's Imoortant for me to note that Dr. Kavalukas distorted her notes/ visit summary, shortly after I called the office requesting them as I wanted to file a formal complaint. A few things-I had called my treatment team In Oregon and ensured they sent my records over to Dr. K prior to the appt.B- I called and spoke to Dr. K's medical assistant a couple of days prior to the appointment to ensure she would have reviewed and the records and they were received. I was assured of both. C- Dr. Kavalukas entered my exam room , I was in with my partner, 45 minutes late. She announced herself ( she did not introduce herself, there is a distinct difference) and made no mention of the fact we were starting 45 minutes late. As did no one. She sat down, looked at no computer, had no records in her hand , crossed her arms across her chest , leaned back in her chair and said curtly "what can I do for you".D- I was dumbfounded and asked if she had seen my records. She said repeatedly " I didnt get the referral, I do t know why you're here"E- The process by which one UofL physician refers a patient to another for specialized service and the efficacy of that process isn't the burden of the patient. Dr. Kavalukas was more interested in assessing the validity of the referral rather than exploring my health condition and treatment. F-When I redirected to the reason for the appt, Dr. K said abruptly "we'll what is your story, what are your symptoms". At this point I let Dr K know " I'd feel way more comfortable having this conversation after you e done your due diligence of at least looking at my records and current treatment plan before we begin our conversation. I think I'll give you you're time back today, and we can set another appt."She didn't like this, but said she would take a few minutes and look at my record. G- The minute she left the room I looked at my partner and said" let's go, this is awful". He agreed, but by that short time, Dr K walked in and almost proudly announced that in short " we don't do your kind of treatment". No additional information, no referral, didn't even put any thought into it. UNTIL I asked. At which point she thought for about 5 seconds and rattled off a hospital that potentially may offer it.Then she stood there with the door open, at which point I said "we're done" and we left I am from this area. I have family members who are alumn if UofL. I have had a long career at Nike in Organzational Psychology. I'm currently in Grad School for Mental Health Counseling. I manage SEVERAL significant health issues and have experience with MULTIPLE hospital systems and healthcare/ practitioners styles. This Is meant to be context for this: I'm fully aware of what acceptable level of health care looks, sounds and feels like. This Dr was the furthest thing from compassionate care. I question her bias against me as a gay man, HIV+ patient, or someone who identifies as a patient in long term recovery. There was something that happened in that room to me ( and my partner) that has never happened in any other healthcare setting. I left stunned, disappointed, and very concerned for my lapse in treatment.
