Practice Spotlight: Innovations in Urology

Published on November 21, 2011

We are pleased to introduce University Physicians Associates–Urology, a practice focused on providing exceptional urologic care to patients of all ages - children to the elderly.

The physicians of UPA–Urology are committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based urologic healthcare based on state-of-the-art knowledge and procedures. As a relatively new addition to the family of University of Louisville Physicians, the urology group seeks to complement the established urology practices throughout the region by providing difficult-to-find care specializing in minimally invasive, trauma and reconstruction, pediatric and general urology.

UPA–Urology recently welcomed Murali K. Ankem, M.D, F.A.C.S. as Chairman of the practice. He is also Chairman and Professor in the Department of Urology. Dr. Ankem previously served as Director of Endourology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School-UMDNJ in New Brunswick, N.J. He received his medical degree from the Rangaraya Medical College, Andhra University, India. He completed his urology residency at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, general surgery residency at Mercy Catholic Medical Center, Darby, PA, and a fellowship in endourology at The University of Wisconsin in Madison. He has published more than 30 papers, abstracts and book chapters relating to urologic surgery.

Dr. Ankem specializes in single-port laparoscopic surgery, and is one of only a few physicians who perform this procedure. It involves removal of kidneys via a keyhole incision in the belly button. This has a potential for a concealed scar in the belly button with faster recovery and less pain, and is particularly well-suited for female and pediatric patients. He also specializes in minimally invasive approaches for urinary stone disease, adrenal disorders and kidney, bladder and prostate cancer.

In addition to Dr. Ankem, outstanding physicians in the practice are: Randall Clark, M.D., F.A.C.S., a general urologist; Daniel G. DaJusta, M.D., a pediatric urologist specializing in minimally invasive and robotic procedures; and Jeremy Tonkin, M.D., a fellowship trained trauma/reconstruction urologist specializing in Peyronies Disease.

Patients are seen at the UofL Health Care Outpatient Center, 401 E. Chestnut St., Suite 480 (adults); and 234 E. Gray St., Suite 662 (children).

The physicians of UPA–Urology look forward to collaborating with their colleagues and providing exceptional care to their patients. Referrals are always welcome. Please call 502-813-6700 (adults) or 502.629.4220 (children).
