Grand Rounds held week of April 30

Several UofL School of Medicine Departments are holding Grand Rounds and special lectures this week. The University of Louisville School Of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The target audience for grand rounds is ULP physicians, UofL residents, fellows, medical students, community physicians and other professional medical staff.


The Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes will hold Grand Rounds on Wednesday, May 2, at 4 p.m. in the Baxter Biomedical Research Building, Lower Level, Room 038. Stephen J. Winters, M.D., professor of medicine and division chief, will discuss, “Estrogens in Males: the Good and the Problematic.”

The Department of Medicine’s Division of Cardiovascular Medicine will hold Grand Rounds on Wednesday, May 2, at noon in the Jewish Hospital Rudd Heart and Lung Center Conference Center- 16th Floor, Great Halls 1 & 2 (201 Abraham Flexner Way). Aruni Bhatnagar, Ph.D., assistant professor of medicine, will present "Environmental Cardiology: Air Pollution and Heart Disease."

The Department of Medicine Grand Rounds will hold its special, 2012 Chairman's Derby Lecture, presented by the UofL Department of Medicine Chairman's Office, on Thursday, May 3. Sharmila K. Makhija, M.D., professor of gynecologic oncology, chairman of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health and Donald E. Baxter Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology at UofL, will present "H.R. 3962: The Affordable Health Care for America Act: A Comparative Analysis of the Economics of Bismarckian Social Health Insurance; The United States, Germany, and Switzerland." Grand Rounds are held at 8 a.m. in the Ambulatory Care Building auditorium.

On Friday, May 4, at 7:30 a.m., the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Women’s Health will present Bruce Carr, M.D., professor and director of the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowship Program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, who will discuss, “Treating Pre- and Post-Menopausal Symptoms with Androgens.” Grand Rounds will be held in the Glass Room in the Ambulatory Care Building. At Neuroscience Grand Rounds Friday, May 4, the Department of Neurological Surgery is pleased to have Darryl Kaelin, M.D., present, “International Center for Advanced Neurorehab (ICAN) Program Update” at 8 a.m. in the School of Nursing, Room 4003. Dr. Kaelin is the Division Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and an Associate Professor in UofL’s Dept. of Neurological Surgery, as well as the Medical Director of the Frazier Rehabilitation Institute.
