Grand Rounds held week of April 16

Several UofL School of Medicine Departments are holding Grand Rounds and special lectures this week. The University of Louisville School Of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The target audience for grand rounds is UofL Physicians physicians, UofL residents, fellows, medical students, community physicians and other professional medical staff.


The Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes will hold Grand Rounds on Wednesday, April 18, at 4 p.m. in the Baxter Biomedical Research Building, Lower Level, Room 038. Eleanor D. Lederer, M.D., professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Nephrology will discuss, “Hyperparathyroidism and the Kidney: When the experimental and the clinical clash.”

The Department of Medicine’s Division of Cardiovascular Medicine will hold Grand Rounds on Wednesday, April 18, at noon in the Jewish Hospital Rudd Heart and Lung Center Conference Center- 16th Floor, Great Halls 1 & 2 (201 Abraham Flexner Way). Roger J. Hajjar, M.D., director of the Cardiovascular Research Center and Arthur & Janet C. Ross professor of medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, will present "Gene Therapy for the Treatment of Heart Failure."

The Department of Medicine’s Division of Cardiovascular Medicine will also hold Grand Rounds on Thursday, April 19, at 8 a.m. in the Ambulatory Care Building Auditorium. Brad S. Sutton, M.D., MBA, assistant professor of medicine at UofL and associate director of electrophysiology at Jewish Hospital, will present "No Margin, No Mission: Financial Viability of Academic Medical Centers in the Era of Health Care Reform." The talk will focus on deciphering the alphabet soup of healthcare reform, describing the unique mission and challenges of academic medical centers (AMC) with regards to healthcare reform, and introducing a strategic framework for cost savings and quality improvement.

On Friday, April 20, at 7:30 a.m., the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Women’s Health will present Zhenmin Lei, M.D., Ph.D., who will discuss, “Estrogens: The Female Hormones in Male Reproduction.” The lecture will demonstrate how the testis is an important estrogen producing organ in males, the impacts of estrogens on testicular steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis and the importance of estrogen receptor-alpha mediated estrogen actions in the testis.
