Dr. Erle Austin, a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon at UofL Physicians, is featured in this Earth 2050 segment on 3D printing. Dr. Austin performed heart surgery on a 13-month-old after the University of Louisville J.B. Speed School of Engineering created a 3D model of the child's heart. The 3D heart aided the surgeon with the procedure by providing a larger scale model of the child's actual heart, allowing the surgical team to better plan and prepare for the surgery.
