With the recent passing of Betty White, who died of a stroke, it is important to remember that recognizing the symptoms of stroke can make all the difference.

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is cut off. When this happens, brain cells can die or be damaged. As a stroke happens, there are signs and recognizing these signs can help increase your chance of recovery.

In the United States, stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability and the fifth most common cause of death. In Kentucky, we are considered in the Stroke Belt where the risk of stroke is 34 percent higher than in other areas of the country.

As Kentucky’s first joint commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, UofL Health – UofL Hospital, along with UofL Health – Jewish Hospital and UofL Health – Mary & Elizabeth Hospital which are Primary Stroke Centers, we are committed to preventing and treating stroke. We also know that time is critical for a stroke patient, and every minute counts. Help us raise awareness of stroke. Help save a life by recognizing the warning signs of stroke by using BE FAST.
