One of the most popular foods of summer is watermelon. This nutritious fruit even has its own day. National Watermelon Day is Aug. 3. Celebrate this delicious seasonal fruit by learning of its health benefits and enjoying a slice or two.

Watermelon is 92 percent water. While nothing replaces the benefits of water, watermelon is a low calorie option to help keep you hydrated. According to the National Watermelon Promotional Board, two servings of watermelon is 80 calories and fat free.

It’s vitamin packed. Watermelon contains a number of vitamins—betaine, choline, copper, folate, lycopene, magnesium, manganese, niacin, pantothenic acid, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, selenium, thiamin, vitamin B-6 and zinc.

There are a number of ways to incorporate watermelon in your diet (year-round). It is good eaten on its own, or add it to a salad or kabobs. It can also be combined with a number of seafood dishes, salsas and relishes.

Still not sure how to select the best watermelon? The National Watermelon Promotional Board suggests that watermelons should be symmetrical and free from bruises, dents and cuts. It should be heavy, remember is mostly made of water. Lastly, watermelon should have a yellow spot from where the fruit sat on the ground and ripened.
