UofL Physicians – Rheumatology is closing effective July 1, 2018 and is no longer accepting new patients.

UofL Physicians - Rheumatology provides comprehensive and compassionate care to patients with arthritis and other disorders of the joints, muscles, and bones, as well as autoimmune disorders and inflammatory conditions. Many rheumatic diseases are chronic life-long conditions that often change or evolve over time.  Our physicians are committed to building long-standing relationships guiding their patients through every step of their treatment plan. In addition, rheumatologic illnesses may be difficult to diagnose in the initial stages; however, our physicians are experienced in the subtle findings of early disease.  By partnering with each patient and their families they begin appropriate treatment as early as possible to ensure the best possible outcomes.

With years of experience, specialized training, and unique clinical skills, our board-certified rheumatologists are dedicated to reaching an accurate diagnosis and will work closely with our patients to design an individualized treatment program that addresses both the underlying disease as well as the associated symptoms such as pain, fatigue, and weakness.  In short, our doctors partner with our patients to help navigate what can often be a life-altering diagnosis and to keep them active and productive.

Some of the most common inflammatory and musculoskeletal diseases we typically treat include:

Some of the most common symptoms of autoimmune diseases include:

  • joint pain and swelling
  • severe morning stiffness
  • unexplained fever
  • rash or skin changes
  • significant muscle weakness
  • unexplained eye pain or redness

UofL Physicians - Rheumatology offers a full range of services to diagnosis and treat arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles and bones, as well as other chronic or acute autoimmune conditions.

Registered nurses with infusion experience staff our hospital-based infusion centers. We have extensive knowledge and experience in the infusion of biologic and other infusion-based treatments for rheumatic and inflammatory disorders. Our infusion center has comfortable reclining chairs and is designed to provide a soothing environment. In addition, we offer University of Louisville Hospital-based diagnostic services including full-service X-ray, MRI, bone densitometry, and an on-site phlebotomy laboratory. In-house ultrasound imaging is available both for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.  Our physicians may use this to obtain detailed musculoskeletal imaging of painful areas, as well as to help guide joint injections.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

A chronic autoimmune disease characterized by antibody-mediated damage to almost any organ system, the most feared complication of this condition is kidney involvement leading to renal failure.  In addition to usual care, we offer a combined Lupus Nephritis clinic in association with the University of Louisville Division of Nephrology.  This cooperative approach allows us to more efficiently manage this disease and its complications.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

New medications and treatment options have transformed the management of this disease.  Where once the emphasis was on relieving symptoms and minimizing joint damage, we now strive for complete disease remission, using a medical arsenal of potent immune-modulating agents.
